FEATURED BILL: ALLOW ERPOS TO PREVENT SUICIDES & SAVE LIVES
Gun violence is a public health epidemic in North Carolina and across the country. In 2018, over 1,000 North Carolinians were killed by gun violence and more than 800 North Carolinians died from firearm suicide.
That’s why Rep. Morey, along with her colleagues Reps. Autry, Gill, and Martin introduced the bill to Allow ERPOs to Prevent Suicides & Save Lives this April.
The bill would allow family members, law enforcement, and health care providers to obtain an Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO). An ERPO is a court order that temporarily restricts a person’s access to firearms if there is evidence that they pose a significant danger of harming themselves or others.
In addition to helping prevent suicides and mass shootings, ERPOs can also be a tool in fighting domestic violence. Nearly 1 million women in the U.S. have been shot or shot at by an intimate partner, and 4.5 times as many have been threatened by a gun in their lifetimes. Let’s save lives.
